I just finished watching the movie, An unreasonable man, which talks about the life of Ralph Nader. Set in documentary style, it shows his crusades towards consumer and public rights and how his life has been affected by his continous efforts for change.
I did not know much about him, but what I saw was impressive. Of course, movies will never tell you everything, nor does a book, and the only way to know someone is to be with them all their life. However, I still believe the movie portrays a decent image of his character and his struggles with the system.
What impressed me most was his willingness to get things done in the system. Many of us get fed up with systems and the corrupt structures, that we end up trying to generate a new system, or discredit the current system, or even engage in illegal activities in order to stress a point, regardless of its validity. Nader on the other hand believed in the system, but he saw that it is not the system that is flawed, but rather the people running the system. This in my opnion is true of all countries in 21st century, and even in history we find many examples of the same. It is very hard for many to imagine that things are good as they stand, because we have been conditioned to think negatively, to believe everything which we do not understand is evil, to take everything personally and attack the other party, we have become un-human and un-civil, if I may catagorize people of today in such terms.
In the movie, the famous bulky Michael Moore, who supported Nader in 2000 but not in 2004, for his reasons right or wrong, said something that made me think. He said, "..the less of two evils is not good, it is still evil." Think about that for a few minutes before you move to the next line. We have been conditioned to accept things as they are because we are afraid that the other extreme or side is more evil, more dangerous, so we end up twisting our beliefs in order to make us think that we are on the right path, because the other path is evil. But is it?
Now I know one person reading this (whispers Alia) is saying, wait a sec. Purg (or maybe it is Uncle Purg), are you saying that you believe in our efforts for change and our attempts to have a decent society without corruption, where indviduals are equal and everyone has rights? The answer, is ........No.
While I admire people who have the drive for change, the belief that bad can be turned into good, I do not advocate their approach, and I believe change occurs as a natural phenomena. People do not influence change, the universe does. Mathematical models have been constructed showing how the universe is an complex system, full with unexplained events occuring at similar times, during similar circumstances. The universe, ruled by God, influences changes. Humans are just puppets, simple minded puppets, who think they have a say in the big place we call U.N.I.V.E.R.S.E, but we are dust in the wind, like this...
